Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman was an American poet, journalist, and essayist, born on May 31, 1819, in West Hills, New York. He is best known for his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which he published in 1855. This collection is considered a masterpiece of American literature and is known for its bold, free verse style and celebration of nature, democracy, and the common man.Whitman grew up in a large family and had limited formal education, but he was an avid reader and taught himself a variety of skills, including typesetting and printing. He began his career as a journalist and worked for a number of newspapers throughout his life. During the Civil War, he volunteered as a nurse and saw firsthand the suffering of soldiers. This experience influenced his later writing, and he became known for his compassionate and empathetic portrayal of humanity in his work.In addition to his work as a writer, Walt Whitman was also a social and political activist. He was an advocate for women's rights, abolitionism, and the rights of workers. His writing often addressed these issues directly and he was known for his progressive views. Whitman believed in the power of literature to effect social change and he used his writing to promote the idea of a more democratic and egalitarian society. His poetry and essays continue to inspire and influence readers today, making him an enduring figure in American literary and cultural history.Whitman's writing was often controversial in his time, but it has had a lasting impact on American literature and culture. His work influenced many writers, including Langston Hughes and Allen Ginsberg, and his celebration of the individual and the natural world continue to resonate with readers today. Whitman died on March 26, 1892, in Camden, New Jersey, but his legacy as a pioneering figure in American literature endures.

It continues with more perennial classics, perfect to give as elegant gifts or to showcase on your own shelves.

W is for Whitman. When Walt Whitman self-published his Leaves of Grass in July 1855, he altered the course of literary history. One of the greatest masterpieces of American literature, it redefined the rules of poetry while describing the soul of the American character. Throughout his life, Whitman continuously revised, expanded, and republished Leaves of Grass, but the 1855 original marked Whitman’s fresh and bold arrival, greeted by Ralph Waldo Emerson as “the beginning of a great career.” This volume specially compiled for Penguin Drop Caps will also include a range of additional popular poems including selections from "Calamus," "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," and "Drum-Taps," as well as Whitman’s 1855, 1856 and 1976 prefaces and “Democratic Vistas.”

Live Oak, with Moss
Live Oak, with Moss
Walt Whitman
Live Oak, with Moss is a groundbreaking literary treasure that reveals a hidden chapter in Walt Whitman's life and work. In this stunning edition, New York Times bestselling and Caldecott Award-winning illustrator Brian Selznick brings Whitman's words to life.As we was turning forty, Whitman wrote twelve deeply personal poems in a handmade notebook he titled Live Oak, with Moss. These verses were intimate meditations on love, desire, and connection-specifically his attraction to and affection for other men-expressed with honesty and vulnerability.Composed decades before the term "homosexual" entered common usage, these poems stand as Whitman's boldest exploration of same-sex love. They were revolutionary for their time, both in theme and in emotional candor, yet Whitman never published them. For more than a century, this passionate cluster of poems remained unknown to the general public, a secret fragment of literary history waiting to be rediscovered.Brian Selznick visual narrative amplifies the beauty and intensity of the poetry. And accompanying Selznick's art, Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener reconstructs the fascinating story behind the creation-and near destruction-of these poems, offering insight into Whitman's inner world and the cultural forces that shaped his work.By reassembling and reinterpreting these extraordinary poems, this edition invites readers to experience Whitman anew-through words and images that resonate with timeless themes of love, identity, and freedom.Walt Whitman's reassembled, reinterpreted Live Oak, with Moss serves as a source of inspiration and a cause for celebration.

Jahrhunderts.

Leaves of Grass
Leaves of Grass
Walt Whitman
'I spring from the pages into your arms'Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass stands as one of the most influential and innovative literary works of the last two hundred years. Widely credited as the originator of free verse in English, Whitman put forward a radical new language of the body, the nation, and same-sex love. After the book's initial publication in June 1855, Whitman revised and expanded the project a further seven times, with subsequent editions appearing at regular intervals until his death in 1892. His revisions to particular poems were often substantial, and the addition of new poems to each edition so extensive, that the books dimensions altered dramatically. This edition introduces Whitmans ongoing labour of revision and renewal his successive responses to the shattering years that encompassed the American Civil War and its aftermath. Beginning with the first edition of 1855, it moves chronologically, selecting and including the most substantial poems and clusters as Whitman first included them. In most cases, this means reprinting the often more politically and sexually daring beginning, rather than the revised end, of a particular poem's journey. The present edition thereby provides a portrait of a poet who attempted to reshape his project in tandem with some of the most tumultuous decades in American history, and who in the process altered forever the parameters and possibilities of poetry itself.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
