Nel 1905 Albert Einstein sottopose agli 'Annalen der Physik' tre articoli. Il primo, che prendeva in esame l'effetto fotoelettrico servendosi della teoria dei quanti di Max Planck, chiarì la natura della luce e gli valse il premio Nobel, che gli venne però conferito nel 1921. Il secondo affrontava il comportamento di piccole particelle in sospensione e fornì la prova dell'esistenza degli atomi. Il terzo, Sull'elettrodinamica dei corpi in moto, in cui delineava la teoria della relatività ristretta, si rivelò essere uno dei più straordinari scritti scientifici mai apparsi. Molto semplicemente, cambiò il mondo. Albert Einstein era nato nel 1879 a Ulm, ma era cresciuto a Monaco di Baviera. Adolescente, si era trasferito con la famiglia a Milano, che aveva lasciato per proseguire gli studi in Svizzera, iscrivendosi nel 1896 all'Istituto politecnico di Zurigo, dove si laureò nel 1900. Aveva subito iniziato a collaborare agli 'Annalen' scrivendo articoli di meccanica statistica, e nel 1902 aveva cominciato a lavorare presso l'Ufficio nazionale brevetti di Berna. Dopo aver risolto con la sua teoria della relatività ristretta alcuni tra i maggiori misteri dell'universo, nel novembre del 1915 Einstein presentò all'Accademia Prussiana delle Scienze la teoria della relatività generale, unanimemente giudicata la più alta realizzazione intellettuale di ogni tempo. Poco dopo aver terminato il suo lavoro sulla relatività generale - e dopo le spettacolari conferme astronomiche che avevano sancito la validità della sua teoria e che lo avevano fatto diventare un'icona universale della scienza -, Albert Einstein si pose il problema di "divulgare" i suoi risultati. La rottura che la visione relativistica rappresentava per la concezione stessa del mondo imponeva ai suoi occhi una spiegazione accurata, ma accessibile a un numero di persone maggiore di quella ristretta cerchia di professionisti della fisica che avevano potuto capire direttamente i suoi scritti tecnici. È così che, dalla mente di uno degli uomini più geniali che siano mai esistiti, nacque Relatività. Esposizione divulgativa, poi continuamente ritoccato in vita dal suo autore, e continuamente ripubblicato, tradotto e studiato in tutto il mondo. Nel 1960 Paolo Boringhieri lo pubblicò in Italia, esattamente nella veste grafica in cui la Bollati Boringhieri lo ripropone oggi, a 100 anni dalla stesura originale della teoria einsteiniana, come omaggio a Einstein, ai lettori e all'intelligenza umana.

The present book is intended, as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics. The work presumes a standard of education corresponding to that of a university matriculation examination, and, despite the shortness of the book, a fair amount of patience and force of will on the part of the reader. The author has spared himself no pains in his endeavor to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form, and on the whole, in the sequence and connection in which they actually originated. In the interest of clearness, it appeared to me inevitable that I should repeat myself frequently, without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation. I adhered scrupulously to the precept of that brilliant theoretical physicist L. Boltzmann, according to whom matters of elegance ought to be left to the tailor and to the cobbler. I make no pretence of having withheld from the reader difficulties which are inherent to the subject. On the other hand, I have purposely treated the empirical physical foundations of the theory in a "step-motherly" fashion, so that readers unfamiliar with physics may not feel like the wanderer who was unable to see the forest for the trees. May the book bring someone a few happy hours of suggestive thought!

Scopo di questo libro è quello di dare, attraverso una selezione diligente degli scritti di Einstein, una rappresentazione concisa, ma chiara e unitaria, delle sue dottrine scientifiche e delle sue concezioni filosofiche. I suoi scritti non sono molti: brevi memorie, qualche saggio abbastanza succinto, conferenze e interviste, è tutto ciò a cui si può attingere per formarsi un'immagine concreta della sua filosofia e del suo atteggiamento verso la vita. Per consentire al lettore non specializzato di comprendere l'essenza e il valore delle teorie della relatività abbiamo riportato nel loro testo originale alcuni scritti e discorsi di Einstein destinati a un pubblico di non matematici e che espongono brevemente la genesi e il carattere di quelle teorie. Scritti in un linguaggio conciso e limpido, senza riferimenti, salvo rare eccezioni, a simboli e formule dell'alta matematica, essi daranno ad ogni lettore di media preparazione una visione chiara delle teorie di Einstein e della logica evoluzione del pensiero che le ha concepite e condotte.
