- Translated from the German, Castro is the first graphic novel to depict the revolutionary life of Fidel Castro. This is the first North American edition; the first English-language edition was published by Selfmade Hero in the UK in 2011 (it was never released outside of Europe).<BR>- The announcement in December 2014 by President Obama and Cuban president Raul Castro that the US and Cuba would begin a process of normalizing relations has propelled Cuba back into the American spotlight, 55 years after the Cuban revolution of 1959.<BR>- The book reveals the life of Castro as seen through the eyes of a German journalist visiting the country as it is thrust into revolution in 1958. We witness Castro's intellectual coming of age as a young man; his charismatic ascent to power after the revolution; his confrontation with and subsequent falling-out with America and, later, post-Soviet Russia; and his defiant, divisive later years, finally retiring in 2008 due to poor health.<BR>- Author Kleist visited Cuba in 2008, which provided rich material for this graphic novel. Kleist is well regarded as a comics artist in his home country of Germany and elsewhere; the subject matter of his graphic novels include Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley.
