Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In order to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the series, De Gruyter is proud to present Tusculum Online, an eBook package which contains all titles that appeared between 1923 and 2013 - a fitting tribute to an important part of German publishing history.<BR>

Die Ausgabe beginnt mit Briefen, die die Haltung des Plinius zu Erziehungsfragen, Sklavenproblemen, Krankheit und Tod, Lebensführung und Lebensform zeigen. Daran wird seine Vorstellung von Humanität und sinnvoller Lebensführung deutlich. Danach sollen diese Erkenntnisse an weiteren Briefen erweitert, korrigiert und vertieft werden. Darunter sind seine Briefe über Frauen, über Wunder, über Provinzverwaltung, über die Christen und über den Vesuvausbruch sowie satirische oder bösartige Briefe mit Kritik an unangenehmen oder sogar kriminellen Zeitgenossen.Damit die Lektüre einer größeren Zahl von Briefen möglich ist, werden einige Passagen in kolometrischer Form oder mit Übersetzung dargeboten. Bei den Anregungen zur Textarbeit wird besonderer Wert auf die Erarbeitung der literarischen Ausdrucksmittel, des zeitlichen und politischen Hintergrunds und der heutigen Bedeutung der Briefe gelegt.
