Hrabal erzählt die Geschichte des liebeskranken jungen Bahnbeamten Milö. Er tut in den letzten Monaten des Zweiten Weltkriegs Dienst in einem kleinen Bahnhof, der an einer wichtigen Strecke liegt. In speziell gesicherten Zügen bringen die Deutschen Verstärkung und Nachschub an die Ostfront, während in Gegenrichtung Lazarettzüge rollen. Wegen einer verdächtigen Verspätung nehmen sie Milö als Geisel, lassen ihn jedoch bald wieder frei. In einer der folgenden Nächte wird Milö von seinem Liebesleiden erlöst. Um so entschlossener beteiligt er sich daraufhin an dem Anschlag auf einen Munitionstransport - und wird schwer verwundet. Hrabal stellt in dieser meisterhaften Erzählung das allzumenschlich Komische und das Entsetzliche hart nebeneinander und verbindet es - mit starker Wirkung.
