Dans Souvenirs de France, Rudyard Kipling porte sur notre pays un regard d'une extraordinaire bonté. Ces souvenirs couvrent une période qui s'étend de 1878 aux suites de la Première Guerre mondiale. Kipling avait douze ans quand il fut autorisé par son père à s'amuser dans les dédales de l'Exposition Universelle, au Trocadéro. A l'époque, le sculpteur Bartholdi érigeait sa statue de la Liberté au front de la Seine et tous les restaurants s'appelaient Duval. Au tournant du vingtième siècle, Kipling traverse notre pays de part en part, en voiture, avec sa femme. Du Canigou au Lavandou, en remontant par Reims, il croise d'étonnants paysans, des ouvriers industrieux, un peuple courtois et aimable. Le propos devient plus politique, mais non moins élogieux, quand survient la Première Guerre mondiale. Kipling considère en effet le soldat français comme plus dur au mal que son allié d'Outre-Manche. Suit une célébration de notre diplomatie coloniale en Afrique. Poincaré et Clemenceau sont ses grands hommes. O France, chère à toute âme éprise du genre humain !, dit cet homme qui a vu son fils enrôlé dans les armées anglaises, mourir sur le sol français durant la Grande Guerre. Un pèlerinage fraternel et émouvant.

The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book is a collection of stories by English Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling. The stories were first published in magazines in 1893-94. The original publications contain illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling. Kipling was born in India and spent the first six years of his childhood there. After about ten years in England, he went back to India and worked there for about six-and-a-half years. These stories were written when Kipling lived in Vermont. Kipling was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He is chiefly remembered for his tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old.The tales in the book (and also those in The Second Jungle Book which followed in 1895, and which includes five further stories about Mowgli) are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle."
