'In einem anderen Land' ist der Roman, der Hemingway berühmt machte, und bis heute der ideale Einstieg in sein Werk. Erstmals 1929 unter dem Titel 'A Farewell to Arms' erschienen, basiert er auf Hemingways Erlebnissen als Freiwilliger im Ersten Weltkrieg. Als er ihn schrieb, war er dreißig Jahre alt, und der Roman wurde als das beste Buch über diesen Krieg gefeiert.Erzählt wird die Geschichte des jungen US-Amerikaners Frederic Henry, der als Sanitätsoffizier an der Front in den Grenzbergen zwischen Österreich und Italien stationiert ist. Dort lernt er die englische Krankenschwester Catherine Berkley kennen und verliebt sich in sie. Vor dem Hintergrund eines ebenso grausamen wie sinnlosen Stellungskrieges - Henry wird schwer verletzt, seine Einheit muss den Rückzug antreten - werden die beiden getrennt und finden wieder zueinander. Das Ende des Romans hat Hemingway nach eigenem Bekunden neununddreißig Mal neu geschrieben. Es hat bis heute nichts von seiner Wucht und Tragik verloren.Der Roman wurde zweimal verfilmt, wobei die Hauptrolle von den beiden Hollywood-Legenden Gary Cooper (1932) und Rock Hudson (1957) gespielt wurde. Men Without Women (1927) is the second collection of short stories written by American author Ernest Hemingway (July 21, 1899 - July 2, 1961). The volume consists of 14 stories, 10 of which had been previously published in magazines. It was published in October 1927, with a first print-run of approximately 7600 copies at $2.<BR>The subject matter of the stories in the collection includes bullfighting, prizefighting, infidelity, divorce, and death.
