RYOJI NOYORI , born in Kobe in 1938, accepted the challenge to look back upon his life. He saw himself living in poverty and often struggling during and after WW II. He saw his parents and their friends guiding and inspiring him. He saw himself climbing up the ranks at the universities in Kyoto and Nagoya, deeply embedded in the Japanese culture. He saw himself conquering organic synthesis and asymmetric homogeneous catalysis as well as green chemistry. Formative was his time with Nobel laureate E. J. Corey at Harvard where he was exposed to a completely different culture. Back in Nagoya, Noyori's scientific success continued and culminated in receiving the Nobel Prize in 2001.His extraordinary care about Japan's science led to his second career, first as President of RIKEN, Japan's largest research institution, and then as a leading figure to many governmental and industrial organizations. The basis of all his activities is a deep sense of responsibility for the society at large and the next generation of scientists.

This is the first complete English translation of Lüshi chunqiu, compiled in 239 b. c. under the patronage of Lü Buwei, prime minister to the ruler of the state of Qin, who was to become the first emperor of a newly unified China fifteen years later. Lü retained a group of scholars whose aim was to encompass the world's knowledge in one great encyclopedia; so delighted was Lü with the finished work that he is said to have offered a fabulous prize of gold to anyone who could add or subtract even a single word. An exceptionally rich and comprehensive compendium, The Annals of Lü Buwei recounts in engaging, straightforward, and readable prose the great variety of beliefs and customs of its time. The work is one of the great monuments of Chinese thinking, a work of originality and cohesion, inspired by a vision of a universal empire ruled by principles that ensured harmony between man and nature, protective of human and animal life, devoted to learning and culture, practicing benevolence and kindness, and motivated by reason and morality. Das Osmanische ist eine vielschichtige Sprache, die in Alltagsgesprächen und der Volksliteratur ebenso Verwendung fand, wie in der klassischen osmanischen Literatur, der Verwaltung und der diplomatischen Korrespondenz. Durch verschiedene Wellen der Sprachreform entwickelte sich aus ihr das moderne Türkisch. Heute ist das Osmanische der Schlüssel zur reichhaltigen Literatur der osmanischen Türken sowie zu den Primärquellen zur Kultur-, Wirtschafts- und der politischen Geschichte mehrerer Staaten im Nahen Osten und auf dem Balkan.
