GI surgery is the newest sub-specialty branch of general surgery, where enhanced expertise and high-volume centres have made a difference in the outcomes of complex operations. Surgeons can now perform difficult procedures with low morbidity and mortality rates, and greatly improved overall results. This volume provides detailed and up-to-date information on diseases of the duodenum and small intestine. It covers anatomy and physiology, paediatric and adult disease, benign, infectious and neoplastic disease, and surgical techniques. Written and edited by international experts in the field, this book will be a valuable resource for duodenum and small intestine surgeons and trainees, general surgeons, researchers, and medical students.

Comprised exclusively of clinical cases, this concise, practical casebook provides clinicians and surgeons with current reconstructive techniques for complicated manifestations of foot and ankle injuries as a result of trauma, neuromuscular disease and deformity. Presenting unique cases in forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot, and ankle surgery, it is sensibly divided into six sections: forefoot maladies, the varus foot and ankle, the valgus foot and ankle, Charcot neuropathy, tendinopathies, and ankle joint revision. Each section demonstrates the surgical techniques chosen in each case, supported by generous, detailed surgical and radiographic slides and diagrams. A consistent chapter format, outlining the case presentation, diagnosis, management, and pearls and pitfalls, ensures its utility and accessibility.Pragmatic and reader-friendly, Challenges in Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Surgery: A Case-based Approach is an excellent resource for foot and ankle surgeons, podiatrists and all clinical staff treating these common yet challenging conditions.

This vastly illustrated book offers a comprehensive survey of the role of imaging in the diagnosis of synovial tumors and tumor-like conditions. It gives an overview of the anatomy and histology of the synovium and discusses the classification, pathology, genetics and molecular biology of synovial tumors. The book presents the benefits of various imaging modalities in the diagnosis of these masses, which is important to provide appropriate treatment.Imaging of Synovial Tumors and Tumor-like Conditions will be a valuable resource not only for radiologists but also for orthopedic surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, and pathologists.

The book covers all aspects of peri-operative anesthetic management of liver transplant patients. It provides a comprehensive coverage of the relevant history, surgeons', hepatologists', intensivists' and pediatricians' perspective of the disease, its pathogenesis, clinical presentation and indication for transplant. It discusses the practical aspects like fluid management and use of vasopressors. The book is divided into sections for a better and comprehensive delivery of information. Individual sections provide up to date information on the pre-operative issues and optimisation, intra-operative care and management and post-operative critical care issues and management of all transplant patients with special emphasis on recent advances. Separate sections cover ICU care of these patients in great detail and anesthetic management of pediatric liver transplant. The book includes anesthetic techniques involved in conducting multiorgan transplant. It discusses clinical approach toa patient with acute liver failure, brain death criteria and laws and organ donor management. It also presents newer techniques and methodologies adopted in the field of liver transplant. It includes ample illustrations, flowcharts, key points in each chapter, figures and photographs. The book contains chapters focusing on post-transplant patients presenting for non-transplant surgery. The book fills the gap in the literature for a comprehensive guide for the anesthetist performing or pursuing liver transplant, students/trainees/examinees who have a keen interest in this field and doctors dealing with such patients in critical care, donor management, pursuing general anesthesia. It is also helpful for hepatologists, intensivists and surgeons associated with liver transplant.

Current practice involves the use of 3D surgical planning and patient-specific solutions in multiple surgical areas of expertise. Patient-specific solutions have been endorsed for several years in numerous publications due to their associated benefits around accuracy, safety, and predictability of surgical outcome. The basis of 3D surgical planning is the use of high-quality medical images (e.g., CT, MRI, or PET-scans). The translation from 3D digital planning toward surgical applications was developed hand in hand with a rise in 3D printing applications of multiple biocompatible materials. These technical aspects of medical care require engineers' or technical physicians' expertise for optimal safe and effective implementation in daily clinical routines. The aim and scope of this Special Issue is high-tech solutions in personalized surgery, based on 3D technology and, more specifically, bone-related surgery. Full-papers or highly innovative technical notes or (systematic) reviews that relate to innovative personalized surgery are invited. This can include optimization of imaging for 3D VSP, optimization of 3D VSP workflow and its translation toward the surgical procedure, or optimization of personalized implants or devices in relation to bone surgery.

Around a quarter of the world's population is affected by iron deficiency, and women of childbearing age as well as children and adolescents are considered a particular risk group. This reference book deals with the latest scientific findings concerning the iron supply of the human organism with natural foods. It dispels the misconception that plant iron is less valuable than animal iron by presenting the absorption of iron from plant foods via a newly discovered metabolic pathway. From this, new points of view can be derived for vegetarians and vegans, who until now have belonged to the risk group. Furthermore, it is dedicated to forward-looking possibilities of diagnosing iron deficiency and describes modern concepts for determining the bioavailability of iron in food. New findings on the biochemistry of iron in brain metabolism, the description of the different reference values of the international professional societies and practical advice for special diets, risk groups and age groups as well as cooking recipes with simple information on iron intake complete the work. The book is aimed at nutritionists and medical practitioners, nutrition and food scientists, dieticians, pharmacists and sports scientists.

Head and neck patients who undergo treatment with free tissue transfer are patients with some of the most complex perioperative needs. Due to nature of the defects, reconstructive surgery is complex and often is the only available option offering an acceptable quality of life. Therefore, successful recovery of these patients is of paramount importance. Whilst the surgery itself is of utmost importance, insufficient or inappropriate pre-surgical work up and post-operative care may lead to reconstructive failures. Secondary reconstruction offers less optimal functional outcomes and may add to patient morbidity due to additional surgeries being required. This book serves as a comprehensive source of information related to the pre-, intra- and postoperative care of head and neck patients. It fills a critical need for a single source that addresses all aspects of perioperative management of head and neck patients.
