'An exhilarating exploration of how we've been touched by the cosmos across human history' LEWIS DARTNELL<BR><BR>'Combines scientific expertise with vivid storytelling and a childlike wonder that shines on every page' TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT<BR><BR>What draws us to the night sky and how can we make sense of all that lies there?<BR><BR>In this unique synthesis of science and culture, former astrophysicist and writer Joanne Baker charts the global history of humanity's relationship with the cosmos. Starting with the nearby Moon before venturing through the solar system to the stars and beyond, she unveils a rich mosaic of stories and research that illuminate the significance of celestial bodies in our everyday lives.<BR><BR>It is a history that transcends borders and cultural traditions, taking us from Mesopotamian moon worship to the science fiction of H. G. Wells and the discovery of black holes. Driven by a personal quest to understand the universe as more than just an abstract mathematical realm, Baker also includes her own sparkling first-hand experiences - from watching a total solar eclipse in Idaho to visiting an ancient observatory in Samarkand.<BR><BR>Starwatchers invites readers on an extraordinary journey through space that interrogates the boundaries of our earthly existence and encourages us to reflect on how we project meaning onto the skies.

A vivid new history of how medieval people around the world perceived the moon<BR>  <BR> When they gazed at the moon, medieval people around the globe saw an object that was at once powerful and fragile, distant and intimate—and sometimes all this at once. The moon could convey love, beauty, and gentleness; but it could also be about pain, hatred, and violence. In its circularity the moon was associated with fullness and fertility. Yet in its crescent and other shifting forms, the moon could seem broken, even wounded.<BR>  <BR> In this beautifully illustrated history, Ayoush Lazikani reveals the many ways medieval people felt and wrote about the moon. Ranging across the world, from China to South America, Korea to Wales, Lazikani explores how different cultures interacted with the moon. From the idea that the Black Death was caused by a lunar eclipse to the wealth of Persian love poetry inspired by the moon’s beauty, this is a truly global account of our closest celestial neighbour.

Moonlight Scars: Emo Moon Magick and the Art of Lunar Sorrow is a hauntingly poetic grimoire for those who feel too deeply in a world that demands numbness. This book is not about light-it's about the glow that remains after the crying ends, the spells born from scars, and the rituals written in silent heartbreak beneath the moon.Through lunar phase rituals, shadow work, sacred tears, and the creation of crying altars, Moonlight Scars guides the emo soul through the art of sorrowful spellwork. You will learn to collect moon-charged tears, design grief temples in your room, channel eclipse energy to rewrite your fate, and create potions of emotional resilience-even when the universe feels silent.Whether you're mourning something you can't name or whispering incantations to the full moon with mascara-streaked cheeks, this book honors your ache and transforms it into magick. Every ritual is permission to feel. Every spell is a reclaiming of softness. Every page is soaked in sorrow and silver. You are not broken. You are becoming.Let your scars shimmer in the moonlight.Let your grief guide your magick.Let your sadness be sacred.

In order to study biodiversity and species extinction, Jean Parrein took an interest in dinosaurs' extinction which happened sixty-six millions years ago. We are at end of the cretaceous period and one event will change the face of the world: the fall of a giant meteorite on our Planet which lowered the temperature by 25°C.Facing climate warning, the author remembered his observations during the solar eclipse of august 1999, event more insignificant, but which brought a fall in temperature during occultation.Fortified by these experiences and in opposite way to the ominously recognized process which aim to a reduction of greenhouse gas, he goes to the origin by provoking a permanent and partial occultation of solar rays.Translation from french by Sylvie Huet-Rooth
