A principal aim of computer graphics is to generate images that look as real as photographs. Realistic computer graphics imagery has however proven to be quite challenging to produce, since the appearance of materials arises from complicated physical processes that are difficult to analytically model and simulate, and image-based modeling of real material samples is often impractical due to the high-dimensional space of appearance data that needs to be acquired.This book presents a general framework based on the inherent coherency in the appearance data of materials to make image-based appearance modeling more tractable. We observe that this coherence manifests itself as low-dimensional structure in the appearance data, and by identifying this structure we can take advantage of it to simplify the major processes in the appearance modeling pipeline. This framework consists of two key components, namely the coherence structure and the accompanying reconstruction method to fully recover the low-dimensional appearance data from sparse measurements. Our investigation of appearance coherency has led to three major forms of low-dimensional coherence structure and three types of coherency-based reconstruction upon which our framework is built.This coherence-based approach can be comprehensively applied to all the major elements of image-based appearance modeling, from data acquisition of real material samples to user-assisted modeling from a photograph, from synthesis of volumes to editing of material properties, and from efficient rendering algorithms to physical fabrication of objects. In this book we present several techniques built on this coherency framework to handle various appearance modeling tasks both for surface reflections and subsurface scattering, the two primary physical components that generate material appearance. We believe that coherency-based appearance modeling will make it easier and more feasible for practitioners to bring computer graphics imagery to life.This book is aimed towards readers with an interest in computer graphics. In particular, researchers, practitioners and students will benefit from this book by learning about the underlying coherence in appearance structure and how it can be utilized to improve appearance modeling. The specific techniques presented in our manuscript can be of value to anyone who wishes to elevate the realism of their computer graphics imagery. For understanding this book, an elementary background in computer graphics is assumed, such as from an introductory college course or from practical experience with computer graphics.

The two-volume set LNCS 6978 + LNCS 6979 constitutes the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, ICIAP 2011, held in Ravenna, Italy, in September 2011.The total of 121 papers presented was carefully reviewed and selected from 175 submissions. The papers are divided into 10 oral sessions, comprising 44 papers, and three post sessions, comprising 77 papers. Martin Charles Golumbic has been making seminal contributions to algorithmic graph theory and artificial intelligence throughout his career. He is universally admired as a long-standing pillar of the discipline of computer science. He has contributed to the development of fundamental research in artificial intelligence in the area of complexity and spatial-temporal reasoning as well as in the area of compiler optimization. Golumbic's work in graph theory led to the study of new perfect graph families such as tolerance graphs, which generalize the classical graph notions of interval graph and comparability graph. He is credited with introducing the systematic study of algorithmic aspects in intersection graph theory, and initiated research on new structured families of graphs including the edge intersection graphs of paths in trees (EPT) and trivially perfect graphs.Golumbic is currently the founder and director of the Caesarea Edmond Benjamin de Rothschild Institute for Interdisciplinary Applications of Computer Science at the University of Haifa. He also served as chairman of the Israeli Association of Artificial Intelligence (1998-2004), and founded and chaired numerous international symposia in discrete mathematics and in the foundations of artificial intelligence.This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Martin Charles Golumbic on the occasion of his 60th birthday, contains 20 papers, written by graduate students, research collaborators, and computer science colleagues, who gathered at a conference on subjects related to Martin Golumbic's manifold contributions in the field of algorithmic graph theory and artificial intelligence, held in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Haifa, Israel in September 2008.

This volume contains the papers presented at the Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis, SCIA 2009, which was held at the Radisson SAS Scandinavian Hotel, Oslo, Norway, June 15-18. SCIA 2009 was the 16th in the biennial series of conferences, which has been organized in turn by the Scandinavian countries Sweden, Finland, D- mark and Norway since 1980. The event itself has always attracted participants and author contributions from outside the Scandinavian countries, making it an international conference. Theconferenceincludedafulldayoftutorialsand?vekeynotetalksprovided by world-renowned experts. The program covered high-quality scienti?c cont- butions within image analysis, human and action analysis, pattern and object recognition,colorimagingandquality,medicalandbiomedicalapplications,face andheadanalysis,computer vision,andmultispectralcoloranalysis. The papers werecarefully selected based on at least two reviews. Among 154 submissions 79 wereaccepted,leadingtoanacceptancerateof51%. SinceSCIAwasarrangedas a single-track event, 30 papers were presented in the oral sessions and 49 papers were presented in the poster sessions. A separate session on multispectral color science was organized in cooperation with the 11th Symposium of Multispectral Color Science (MCS 2009). Since 2009 was proclaimed the "International Year of Astronomy" by the United Nations General Assembly, the conference also contained a session on the topic "Imageand PatternAnalysis in Astronomyand Astrophysics. " SCIA has a reputation of having a friendly environment, in addition to hi- quality scienti?c contributions. We focused on maintaining this reputation, by designing a technical and social program that we hope the participants found interesting and inspiring for new research ideas and network extensions. We thank the authors for submitting their valuable work to SCIA.
