You feel you should be doing something, but the thought of "marketing" gives you nightmares. You don’t want to become one of these people shouting "Buy My Book!" on Twitter. But you would still love to start selling some books, and pay some or even all of your bills with your writing income. The good news is that this is ever more possible when self-publishing, if you set yourself up right. This is where the three-year plan comes in.The Three Year, No-Bestseller Plan For Making a Sustainable Living From Your Fiction has been a popular forum and blog post on the subject of career and audience building vs chasing sales and rankings of individual books.People have long asked me if I’m going to turn the post into a book. However, few people mention one of the most powerful ways to keep your backlist selling: the author mailing list. This is where Mailing Lists Unboxed comes in. It shows you:--The different types of author mailing lists--How to recruit people to sign up--What to do with your list once you have one--Attitudes about mailing lists, including those that stand in your way--Warnings and precautions--And much moreThis is not a book for beginners.

In the wake of independence from French colonialism, a generation of North African nationalist leaders and progressive thinkers reimagined their futures through essays, periodicals, and publishing networks. Leaping Decolonization explores how these debates unfolded from the early 1960s to the early 1980s, when intellectuals across Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia challenged colonial legacies, questioned the meaning of progress, and redefined the role of tradition in their societies. Idriss Jebari constructs a transnational intellectual history grounded in the lived experience of the region's post-colonial transformations. It is organized in a series of 'debates' on the meaning of decolonization, ranging from national culture to social emancipation. This study further sheds light on how radical thought was produced under authoritarianism, seeking to capture the aspirations of youth movements, and how North Africa's decolonization connects with other historical experiences. In doing so, Jebari addresses ongoing questions about the meaning of global history and the voices of intellectual peripheries from the Global South on the world stage.

A vibrant account of the remarkable novel Lady Chatterley's Lover, tracing its life over the last centuryD. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover is one of the best-known and most resonant works of the twentieth century. Originally considered obscene and unpublishable in numerous countries, its scandalous story of class divide and the English countryside is infamous. But, since the 1920s, we have repeatedly re-created Lady Chatterley, from film and TV to music and tourism.Guy Cuthbertson tells the colourful story of the novel's journey through the last hundred years. He examines how the book has been read, adapted, and reimagined across the globe, from the United States to Japan, and explores the 1960 "Chatterley trial"-a key moment in the struggle for freedom of expression. It might have been burnt and derided, laughed at and defaced, but Lawrence's novel has crept into all walks of life. Whether the book, or its influence, be good or bad, we live in a world that Lady Chatterley's Lover helped to create.

This volume is intended as an assessment of the situation of the specialized world of parliamentary and public authority libraries. It brings together contributions from libraries of various sizes, sponsors (federal, state) and institutions (parliaments, ministries, courts, authorities) and describes their current challenges as well as their approaches to address them. Its central theme is digital change. How does it affect parliamentary and public authority libraries, which business areas are affected? What adjustments are there, e.g. in acquisitions with regard to print vs. online? Are there any new services being offered in terms of use/customer acquisition and others that have been abolished because there was no longer any demand for them? How do parliamentary and government libraries function in the "post-COVID" period, what effects do the home office regulations of the institutions have on the internal organization and the relationship between online vs. face-to-face use? The articles in this volume are based on these and similar key questions. Taken together, they provide an insight into the structural challenges facing parliamentary and public authority libraries and the possibilities for successfully addressing them.

A Book of the Year in the Daily Telegraph and EconomistLONGLISTED for the CWA ALCS Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction 2026'This book reads like a spy novel'FINANICAL TIMES'Entertaining and vivid'OBSERVER------------------------------------The astonishing story of the ten million books that were smuggled across the Iron Curtain during the Cold War.For almost five decades after the Second World War, Europe was divided by the longest and most heavily guarded border on earth. The Iron Curtain, a near-impenetrable barrier of wire and wall, tank traps, minefields, watchtowers and men with dogs, stretched for 4,300 miles from the Arctic to the Black Sea. No physical combat would take place along this frontier: the risk of nuclear annihilation was too high for that. Instead, the conflict would be fought in the psychological sphere. It was a battle for hearts, minds and intellects. No one understood this more clearly than George Minden, the head of a covert intelligence operation known as the 'CIA books programme', which aimed to win the Cold War with literature. From its Manhattan headquarters, Minden's global CIA 'book club' would infiltrate millions of banned titles into the Eastern Bloc, written by a vast and eclectic list of authors, including Hannah Arendt and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, George Orwell and Agatha Christie. Volumes were smuggled on trucks and aboard yachts, dropped from balloons, and hidden in the luggage of hundreds of thousands of individual travellers. Once inside Soviet bloc, each book would circulate secretly among dozens of like-minded readers, quietly turning them into dissidents. Latterly, underground print shops began to reproduce the books, too. By the late 1980s, illicit literature in Poland was so pervasive that the system of communist censorship broke down, and the Iron Curtain soon followed.Charlie English tells this true story of spycraft, smuggling and secret printing operations for the first time, highlighting the work of a handful of extraordinary people who risked their lives to stand up to the intellectual strait-jacket Stalin created. People like Miroslaw Chojecki, an underground Polish publisher who endured beatings, force-feeding and exile in service of this mission. And Minden, the CIA's mastermind, who didn't waver in his belief that truth, culture, and diversity of thought could help free the 'captive nations' of Eastern Europe. This is a story about the power of the printed word as a means of resistance and liberation. Books, it shows, can set you free.

Knowledge, Reading and Culture: Studies in Information Practice is an interdisciplinary inquiry focusing on four decades of work by the South African information scientist, Emeritus Professor Archie Dick. The edited volume brings together library, information and history specialists to engage with a number of Professor Dick's areas of research focus: the culture and philosophy of information (especially with regard to questions of epistemology); information freedom (how censorship and media concentration affects political agency); reading and publishing cultures (especially in colonial and postcolonial contexts) and focuses on how these affect information education for diverse, multicultural and cosmopolitan communities. How our understanding of true belief is justified at the level of classification, indexation, curation and publishing have become significant issues in the transition to digital environments. This work seeks to harness a range of insights relating to the modes of knowledge representation in information spaces and to uncover how these impact globally significant repertoires of agency, with a special focus on how the mediation of reading and access to public knowledge is both a site of resistance and appropriation.
