This autobiography chronicles the life and career of Haralampos M. Moutsopoulos, an internationally renowned professor of medicine and prolific researcher on Sjögren¿s syndrome and autoimmune rheumatic diseases. In language that is simple and direct, he takes us on a fascinating journey from the days of his first scientific awakenings at a hospital in his native town of Ioannina, Greece, through his university years in Athens and training in the U.S., to his eventual return to his homeland. In Greece, he developed two centers of excellence in his field, first at the newly founded University of Ioannina Medical School Department of Internal Medicine and, second, at the Athens University Medical School, Department of Pathophysiology, where he taught until his retirement in 2011. Along the way, he introduces us to his teachers and mentors, and to the colleagues and students he mentored in turn, many of whom went on to assume high-ranking positions in Greece and abroad. A major theme throughout the book is his impassioned struggle for excellence, meritocracy, and transparency in universities and in the National Health System in Greece. Peppered with both amusing and unsettling incidents from this lifelong crusade to raise professional standards and against misconduct, the book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about or entering the medical profession.

This open access book provides an overview of the International Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis (IMAS) project -focusing on Europe-, a wide-ranging, multi-disciplinary collaboration between academic groups, Health Care Professionals (HCPs), patient organizations and Novartis. IMAS was conceived to improve knowledge of Axial Spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and raise awareness of its heavy burden globally. Autoimmunity, characterized by autoreactive lymphocytes and autoantibodies, is the consequence of a failure to discriminate between self and non-self, and autoimmune diseases are an increasing threat to people living in the industrialized countries. Autoimmune disorders are treatable, but not curable, and patients can face disability at later stages of the disease. Thus, there is a medical and economic need for new concepts and treatments in autoimmune disorders. New concepts and treatments can only be achieved by an interdisciplinary approach bringing together expertise, technologies, and clinical experience. The workshop focused on multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and type I diabetes, and discussed conventional drug therapies, gene therapy, cell and tissue transplantation therapies, and first treatments using blood stem cells for reprogramming the patients' immune system.

This book synthesizes the current literature on the effects of vaping on voice and discusses the pathophysiology of voice symptoms in affected patients. The detrimental impact of e-cigarette smoking on various systems in the body, including those that affect voice production, is also reviewed. E-cigarette smoking has been shown to impair pulmonary function, which jeopardizes the power source for voice production. It has been associated with an increase in sinonasal and oral symptoms, thus altering voice resonance and quality. Vaping has been linked to reflux disease and esophagitis, putting the defenseless lining of the larynx and pharynx at risk of injury by the gastroduodenal refluxate. Providing insights on the adverse effects of e-cigarette smoking on the phonatory apparatus is of paramount importance, particularly in professional voice users who rely on their voice to make a living. E-Cigarette Smoking, Voice, and Health is addressed to all medical doctors, interns, and health care providers, and in particular to otolaryngologists, laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, and voice therapists.

This book contains the essential information required by physicians and bench scientists to understand the definition of a given autoimmune disease and its diagnostic criteria and treatment. Autoimmune diseases are a family of more than one hundred chronic, and often disabling, illnesses that develop when underlying defects in the immune system lead the body to attack its own organs, tissues, and cells. In Autoimmune Disease Diagnosis: Systemic and Organ-specific Diseases, the editors have gathered a critical review by renowned experts of more than 120 autoimmune diseases. A contemporary overview of these conditions with special emphasis on diagnosis is presented. This edition of Autoimmune Disease Diagnosis is divided into two parts, the first covering systemic autoimmune diseases, and the second covering organ-specific autoimmune diseases. They cover all the newly approved classification criteria, such as those for systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, several systemic vasculitis, etc. This edition also reviews newly described systemic autoimmune conditions: immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, VEXAS, immunoglobulin G4-associated autoimmune disease, autoimmune/autoinflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA), and autoimmune manifestations induced by immune-therapies. Several organ-specific diseases have been added, including autoimmune alopecia and other immune-mediated dermatosis, autoimmune encephalitis, and autoimmune dysautonomia, among others. This is an essential guide to the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases for internists, rheumatologists, clinical immunologists, primary care physicians, and bench scientists.
