Although cancer survival has improved markedly in developed countries in recent decades, not all groups have benefited equally. In particular, Indigenous and Tribal peoples continue to have poorer cancer outcomes than their non-Indigenous counterparts. The available evidence suggests these disparities are linked to a complex combination of factors, including higher incidence of cancers associated with a high case fatality, later stage of diagnosis, reduced access to cancer treatment, and poorer overall health. Much research is underway to explore approaches to improving health system responses for Indigenous and Tribal peoples. A developing evidence base is supporting effective translation of knowledge into practice. This book offers a global perspective on this evidence base, written from Indigenous perspectives. This book is the first comprehensive publication to report on cancer incidence, mortality, prevalence, survival, and inequities for Indigenous and Tribal peoples globally, with the aim of enhancing global efforts to improve outcomes for these populations. Its content and approach are led by Indigenous researchers with international reputations in health and cancer research. Chapters provide important information and data to support Indigenous-specific, targeted cancer awareness and early detection campaigns. This book goes beyond a discussion of the issues and challenges in Indigenous health, with a strengths-based approach to discussing successful health interventions, research projects, research translation, and living well - both with and beyond cancer. This is an open access book.

Living in urban areas has long been recognized as a risk factor for mental illness despite the advantages of cities over villages. The impact of urbanization on mental health and stress is significant and is likely to increase over the next few years. Thus, considering the stress difference in the world cities and its increase, urban planners, urban managers, and urban designers should urgently consider it an essential principle in their plans and designs to reduce its side effects. This book is a comprehensive guide for urban planners who seek to reduce urban stress in the urban environment but lack proper training and texts. Urban designers will have a unified vision to reduce urban stress caused by the appearance of the city environment. It will be useful for city managers and policymakers since this book identifies urban policies which reduce urban stress and stressful urban factors. Also, it will help urban psychologists, sociologists, architects, and social science researchers to better understand the relationship between their field and stress relief urban planning.

Around a quarter of the world's population is affected by iron deficiency, and women of childbearing age as well as children and adolescents are considered a particular risk group. This reference book deals with the latest scientific findings concerning the iron supply of the human organism with natural foods. It dispels the misconception that plant iron is less valuable than animal iron by presenting the absorption of iron from plant foods via a newly discovered metabolic pathway. From this, new points of view can be derived for vegetarians and vegans, who until now have belonged to the risk group. Furthermore, it is dedicated to forward-looking possibilities of diagnosing iron deficiency and describes modern concepts for determining the bioavailability of iron in food. New findings on the biochemistry of iron in brain metabolism, the description of the different reference values of the international professional societies and practical advice for special diets, risk groups and age groups as well as cooking recipes with simple information on iron intake complete the work. The book is aimed at nutritionists and medical practitioners, nutrition and food scientists, dieticians, pharmacists and sports scientists.

In line with advances in digital and computing systems, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies have transformed many aspects of medical and healthcare services, delivering tangible benefits to patents and the general public. This book is a sequel of the edition on "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Healthcare". The first volume is focused on utilization of AI and ML for image and data analytics in the medical and healthcare domains. In this second volume, emerging methodologies and future trends in AI and ML for advancing medical treatments and healthcare services are presented. The selected studies in this book provide readers a glimpse on current progresses in AI and ML for undertaking a variety of healthcare-related tasks. The advances in AI and ML technologies for future healthcare are also discussed, shedding light on the potential of AI and ML to realize the next-generation medical treatments and healthcare services for the betterment of our global society.

One third of misdiagnosed medical cases result in serious injury or death. Moreover, 40,000-80,000 deaths occur each year in the United States alone because of misdiagnosis. This is a major clinical crisis that medical schools and hospitals have failed to adequately address. There is currently no book available that provides general clinicians with the knowledge to prevent such lethal errors in a variety of disciplines.Composed of clinical cases, the book represents seventy chapters fashioned into sixteen modules and are organized by systems, such as allergy and immunology, cardiology, neurology and rheumatology, just to name a few. Each chapter is organized with a general introduction to the topic followed by the name of the specific disease. Next comes the actual clinical case presentation followed by the differential diagnosis. It then explains what was misdiagnosed in the specific case and why. A general discussion and plan of action is then described followed by a conclusion. Uniquely incorporated in the book is a chapter dedicated to the legal perspectives of misdiagnosis followed by an editor's perspective. The Misdiagnosis Casebook in Clinical Medicine is a valuable and much-needed resource for clinicians as well as practitioners in all areas of medicine.

This book aids clinicians in supporting and caring for transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents - youth who are born into an incongruent body. A recent study using data from 19 states reported that 1.8% of American youth identified as transgender. Many people who are transgender will experience gender dysphoria, the intense emotional distress that is caused by a discrepancy between a person's gender identity and their sex assigned at birth. In this compact volume, the authors discuss the variety of domains involved in addressing gender dysmorphia: social, psychological, medical, and legislative/advocacy. They provide clear and concise information on the types and timing of gender-affirming medications and surgical interventions and offer useful suggestions for making interactions in the clinic and the clinical space inclusive for transgender and gender-diverse youth. Among the topics covered include:identity development and gender nonconformity in early childhood and pubertythe importance of access to mental health professionals with expertise in gender nonconformitythe responsible use of developmentally appropriate gender-affirming medications and surgical interventionsrelated clinical issues such as nutrition counselling for youth receiving gender-affirming treatmentscreating a safe and inclusive healthcare environment for transgender and gender-diverse youthadvocating for transgender and gender-diverse patients by working with local and national policy makersProviding Affirming Care to Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth is essential reading for pediatric healthcare professionals including physicians in pediatrics and family medicine, plastic surgeons, nurses, dietitians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other practitioners. Students in these fields as well aspolicy makers also would find this a useful resource.
