Go Ahead! Kick Me Out of School!
Sixth-grader Jeremy Pryor isn't about to stay in school. He's fed up with classmates calling him dumb, stupid, retard. With a new set of foster parents, Jeremy plans on being home schooled. Little does he know.Mr. and Mrs. Daniels aren't exactly ordinary parents. And their other foster child Kent, a seventeen-year-old who cracks his knuckles every three seconds, gives Jeremy a hard time. To say the least.Jeremy is ready to move on to another set of foster parents. Except for one thing. He likes the Daniels. They're interesting to Jeremy. His foster mother is a newspaper correspondent and his foster father sells tombstones. More important, both show their love for Jeremy. A victim of child abuse, Jeremy, however, wonders if the Daniels are up to something. And, if they are, what could it be?At first Kent and his friends-J.D. and Matt-tease Jeremy nonstop and, since they are bigger, Jeremy can't fight back. That's why when they ask Jeremy to do them a favor, he does. Then Kent and his friends treat Jeremy well. Now Jeremy wonders if the white box Kent and his friends asked him to deliver to a guy contained drugs. On top of that, Jeremy still hasn't learned his multiplication tables. How could he when his former foster mother kept locking him in a dark closet? The Daniels arrange for Kent to help Jeremy with math. The process teaches Jeremy that even though Kent appears tough on the outside he is not a bad guy deep inside. To Jeremy's surprise, he learns to really like Kent and doesn't want anything bad to happen to his foster brother. So Jeremy takes a courageous stand by confessing to Wilma and Ben about Kent and his friends. Wilma and Ben inform the police. After the police investigate, Jeremy knows Kent and his friends are involved with drugs. Jeremy suggests to Wilma and Ben that they take Kent to a talk-show that is giving a presentation section on gangs and drugs. The Daniels agree it's a great idea. Naturally, Kent doesn't want to go, but it's either that or a juvenile detention center. As a result of the show, Kent goes to boot camp, even though he doesn't want to.Meanwhile, Jeremy has sharp stomach pains. The doctor discovers Jeremy needs to have his appendix removed. Several days later and after surgery, Jeremy heads for home. Wilma and Ben tell him that they have a big surprise for him. For the life of him, Jeremy can't figure out what the surprise could be.Then, when Jeremy sees Kent at home, Jeremy realizes Kent changed. Thanks to the three-day boot camp. As for the Daniels, they're up to something all right. Jeremy discovers that something is what he always wanted, a real family. The Daniels adopt Kent and Jeremy.

Daddy's Waves
Ellie's dad did not come for their visit, and Ellie is stuck in a cloud of sadness and anger as she tries to understand why. Fortunately, Miss K. and Ellie's Uncle Finny are there to help her. Using the metaphor of a wave, they help Ellie talk about and understand her daddy's ups and downs, recognize and hold on to loving memories, and know that she is not alone. Millions of young children live in families with an adult who is struggling due to trauma (ACEs), mental illness (PTSD, depression, bipolar), substance abuse, or other addiction. Daddy's Waves was written for any child who has a family member who struggles with emotional waves whether they live together or not.The story was developed to open doors to conversations that young children need to have. When family members have challenges, young children worry about them and often have many difficult questions. They need the help of grown-ups within and outside their families To have language for the challenges that their parents faceTo know that they can talk about tough times and good timesTo better understand why their parent may not be around And, very importantly, to keep good memories alive because these memories shape their view of themselves as worthy of love Daddy's Waves shows us that these conversations are possible, important, and support healing and connection. While the book was written specifically for children whose parents have struggled with addiction or mental illness, other children may benefit from having language and dialogue that helps them to empathically understand the challenges that too many families are facing.Daddy's Waves is the second book in the Ellie Bean series and was developed by the team that created Once I Was Very Very Scared, You Weren't With Me, Holdin Pott, and the Trinka and Sam story series as tools to help families heal after stressful or traumatic events. Daddy's Waves is an adaptation of Mama's Waves and was developed at the request of families and therapists.

On the Rocks
An inspiring story about the ups and downs of family. Fourteen-year-old Dylan is sent to live with his estranged grandfather, Angus. Basically strangers, the two avoid each other as best they can. One day Dylan discovers a young orca stranded high up on the rocky beach. Dylan runs to tell his grandfather. There's nothing that can be done, says Angus. The sun is coming up, and soon the orca will die of exposure. But Dylan knows he has to try to save the whale. He collects towels to cover the delicate skin of the orca and begins transporting buckets of water from the ocean below to keep it hydrated. It's grueling work, and it will be hours before the tide comes back in and the water is high enough for the orca to swim free. Angus is moved by his grandson's determination and helps as best he can. They both desperately hope that soon the orca will be able to join its family, who have been calling out to it just offshore. This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for middle-grade readers who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don't like to read! The epub edition of this title is fully accessible. Available in French as Échoué.
