Available open access digitally under CC-BY licence. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a drug taken by HIV-negative people that reduces the risk of getting HIV. Comparing two case studies in Denmark and Zimbabwe, this book demonstrates six paradoxes that users often encounter in navigating their PrEP journey. These paradoxes lead to contentions, uncertainties, dilemmas and ambiguities that need to be carefully and pensively responded to through what the author terms 'everyday PrEP negotiations'. The social nature and need for such everyday PrEP negotiations help explain why PrEP works for some people and not for others. This book argues that such insight is critical to make PrEP work for more people and to inform social public health responses.

In der Konsequenz mussten Kernforderungen überdacht und das Verhältnis zum Staat neu ausgelotet werden. Zudem wandelte sich das eigene Selbstverständnis sowie Vorstellungen von Zugehörigkeit und Solidarität. Der Band fragt nach diesen Transformationsprozessen und richtet den Blick hierbei auf das Recht als subjektivierende Instanz und Arena der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Staat.At the beginning of the AIDS crisis, a differentiated gay movement and community already existed in West Germany. This community was subsequently confronted with a radical change in its living environment. In addition to the immediate threat of illness and death, new debates about state measures to combat the epidemic also had consequences for gay men. As a result, the movement's core demands had to be reconsidered and the relationship to the state had to be reassessed. In addition, their notions of identity and ideas of belonging and solidarity changed. The volume examines these transformations and focuses on law as a subjectivizing authority and arena for engagement with the state.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) belongs to the Retroviridae family and the sub family Lentivirinae. Infection with HIV usually culminates in AIDS over a variable period of time. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV primarily infects critical cells in the human immune system such as helper T cells (specifically CD4 T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells). The infection results in the loss of natural defense against trivial infections and makes the patient susceptible to various opportunistic infections resulting in the eventual death of the patient. HIV has a diploid RNA genome encoding nine viral proteins. HIV-1, demonstrates high genetic diversity due to lack of proof reading ability of its enzyme, reverse transcriptase. Although the HIV-1 epidemic in India is mainly due to subtype C, other subtypes have also been reported from different parts of India. To combat the infection and for the development of new anti-viral strategies, it is necessary to appreciate the extent of naturally found variations in HIV-1 genes. The focus of the present work was to study the naturally occurring novel mutations in HIV-1 Rev. LTR, Nef and Vpu genes. Since Rev is an important regulatory gene of HIV-1 genome for expression of HIV-1 structural proteins and production of genomic RNA. We first study the genetic and functional characterization of HIV-1 Rev derived from HIV-1 infected individuals in North India to find out the levels of genetic changes and to determine their functional relevance.
