James Joyce was born in Dublin on 2 February 1882, the eldest of ten children in a family which, after brief prosperity, collapsed into poverty. He was nonetheless educated at the best Jesuit schools and then at University College, Dublin, and displayed considerable academic and literary ability. Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all of his fiction. He is best known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). James Joyce died in Zürich, on 13 January 1941.

Über das Verhältnis des letzten Kapitels des Ulysses - den Monolog von Molly Bloom - zum Gesamtwerk kommt eine Interpretation zu folgendem Urteil: »Die interpunktionslose Momentaufnahme von Molly Blooms dahinströmenden, unlogisch verknüpften Bewußtseinsinhalten (...) hat wie keine andere stilistische und inhaltliche Besonderheit das Bild vom Ulysses geprägt.« Um anhand dieses Kapitels einen Zugang zu Kompositionstechnik und Schreibweise des Ulysses zu ermöglichen, werden in dem vorliegenden Band drei »Fassungen« dieses Kapitels vorgelegt: der englische Originaltext des »Penelope«-Kapitels, die 1927 erschienene Übersetzung dieses Kapitels von Georg Goyert und die Neuübertragung durch Hans Wollschläger. Diese erstmalige Präsentation des englischen Originals zusammen mit den beiden Übersetzungen erlaubt es gleichzeitig, einen Einblick in unterschiedliche Interpretationen des Ulysses zu erhalten, wie sie durch die zwei unterschiedlichen Übertragungen gegeben sind.

Als James Joyce im Oktober 1904 Dublin verließ, hatte er in seinem Koffer nicht nur Entwürfe und Materialien zu den "Dubliner"-Erzählungen, sondern auch Aufzeichnungen, Skizzen und bereits fertige Epiphanien zu einem autobiografischen Roman. Diesen arbeitete er zwischen 1904 und 1906 in Pola, Rom und Triest aus. In einem Brief an den Verleger Grant Richards heißt es, tausend Seiten des Romans seien fertig, rund die Hälfte des geplanten Buches. Aber in einem Anflug von Verzweiflung, weil er seine Manuskripte nirgends unterbringen konnte, warf Joyce 1911, so will es die Legende, den gesamten Text ins Feuer, aus dem seine Schwester 383 Seiten rettete. Diese Seiten wurden 1944 unter dem Titel "Stephen Hero, Stephen der Held", veröffentlicht. Sie umfassen die Jahre des jungen Joyce, der sich Stephen Dedalus nannte, am University College in Dublin.Im Herbst 1907 begann Joyce den Roman umzuarbeiten, d. h. neu zu schreiben. Aus dem weitschweifigen Text von "Stephen Hero" wurde die komprimierte, komplexe Textur des "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man". Die für den "Ulysses" später so zentrale Leitmotivtechnik wurde hier zum ersten Mal erprobt.
