Dr Samuel Johnson (1709-84) is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of English literature, as a poet, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. This collected edition of his works - commissioned by the publisher within hours of Johnson's death, such was his celebrity - was published in 1787 in eleven volumes, edited by his literary executor, the musicologist Sir John Hawkins. Volume 5 contains the first part of The Rambler, the periodical published by Johnson twice a week between 1750 and 1752. Modelled on Addison's Spectator, the essays address a wide range of social, religious, political and literary themes, and are not exclusively by Johnson himself: there are contributions by others, particularly women writers such as Hester Chapone and Elizabeth Carter. The Rambler adopted an 'elevated' style, and topics range from criticism of the emerging novel genre to discussions of humanitarian issues such as prostitution and capital punishment.

Johnson, Samuel

Samuel Johnson (1846-1901) fue un clérigo, historiador y educador yoruba nacido en Hastings, Sierra Leona, en el seno de una familia de origen nigeriano. Ordenado ministro de la Iglesia Anglicana, dedicó gran parte de su vida a la enseñanza y a la labor pastoral en Oyo, Nigeria. Su obra más importante, Historia de los Yorubas (publicada póstumamente en 1921), es considerada la primera gran sistematización escrita de la tradición oral, la política, la religión y las costumbres del pueblo yoruba, y constituye un referente esencial para la historiografía africana moderna.

Samuel Johnson was a well-known literary figure in England. Johnson was an author, lexicographer, biographer and critic. Johnson has been quoted more than any other English author with the exception of Shakespeare. Much of Johnson's fame is attributed to the biography done by Boswell. The biography centers on the latter part of Johnson's life, thus Johnson has been seen more as a gruff society figure than as the struggling and poverty-stricken writer that he was for much of his life. Johnson states that grammar is the art of using language correctly. Grammar can be divided into 4 parts: orthography, etymology, syntax and prosody. "Orthography is the art of combining letters into syllables, and syllables into words. Etymology teaches the deduction of one word from another, and the various modifications by which the sense of the same word is diversified. Prosody comprises orthoepy, or the rules of pronunciation; and orthometry, or the laws of versification."
