We take great pleasure in presenting this Work to the trade, confident that it will meet a long-felt need. Although it addresses garments somewhat beyond the usual scope of tailoring practice, they nevertheless form a legitimate, and indeed essential, part of it. There is no more reason to decline orders for such garments simply because certain firms have chosen to specialize in them than there would be in refusing to make a pair of breeches or any other item that naturally belongs within the tailor's craft. It is the duty of every progressive house to embrace those branches which, though sometimes neglected, are vital to the completeness of a craftsman's repertoire.As regards the Work itself, the systems, instructions, and details of execution, we submit with confidence that they will be found both reliable and of genuine practical service. They are not the product of theory or speculation, but rather of one who has gained wide and varied experience in this particular branch of the trade and is therefore well qualified to speak with authority.Both the diagrams and the accompanying text have been prepared with the greatest care, uniting clarity with refinement. Every line has been drawn with precision, and every explanation phrased with utmost attention, so that the student may proceed with confidence and the experienced practitioner may find their skill further enriched. No effort has been spared to make this Work worthy of its title: a genuine Guide to Shirt Cutting - not merely a compilation of rules, but a practical manual filled with hints and suggestions of lasting value to both learner and expert.

We have had very many indications that the work is highly appreciated by all who have procured it, and many testimonies might be recorded if that were necessary. This Third Edition has been prepared in all its original completeness. With such a work in their possession, neither the inexperienced student nor the cutter in full practice should have any difficulty producing any of the garments treated and illustrated in this work.

It is now about three years since we added a new part to "The Cutter's Practical Guide Systems" in the form of a Work on ladies' tailor-made garments. Not only has a large Edition been disposed of, but a number of the styles which were then popular are now out of date. In preparing this new Edition, a number of what are now regarded as old styles are deleted, and the new and popular styles of the period take their place.The Work is based on the "Guide" System, and was originally prepared to meet a two-fold want or demand - an instructor and guide to the production of all the new and popular styles in tailor-made garments; and also the demand for such a work by the Practical Guide System.The Work itself will bear testimony to its scope, and the way in which every current, as well as new style of Ladies' Tailor-made Garment is treated and illustrated. Here we have the systems for producing the garments, each illustrated by beautifully engraved diagrams; and there is, further, the finished garments, illustrated upon artistically engraved figures. The Work thus presents a completeness which renders it an invaluable acquisition to the ladies' cutter. We doubt not but this new and latest Work will fully sustain the character we have already attained by the Works now being published at the TAILOR AND CUTTER Office.

"The Cutter's Practical Guide" being the present acknowledged Standard System of Cutting at the Tailor and Cutter Office and the System taught to the Students at our Academy, it has, in a variety of forms and adaptations, been laid before the members of the tailoring trade. The cordial reception it has met has induced us to develop both the System and its applications, and prepare these for publication in more permanent form. Part One has already appeared, in which the System is adapted more particularly to Youths' and Juvenile Garments. A promise was then made that Part Two, embracing every Style and Class of Gents' Body Coats, would ultimately be published.The present work will be valued, not only for its application to ordinary coats, but by many more because it embraces many garments which in most trades are regarded special and unusual. Among these we may reckon Military, Naval, and Livery garments, with other classes of official and non-official dress, which the head of every respectable firm is liable to be called upon to make.The work throughout will be found thoroughly practical in its mode of representingand dealing with the various styles and classes of garments. Everything superfluous is studiously avoided. The work is prepared for practical Cutters and for everyday use, which will be greatly facilitated by the large clear type and equally clear engraving of the Plates. We feel confidence in placing it in the hands of our many patrons.
