Tanya Ronder trained at RADA as an actress before becoming a playwright. Her plays include adaptations of Blood Wedding (Almeida Theatre), Vernon God Little (Young Vic, nominated for an Olivier Award) and Peribanez, and Table, which was the inaugural production at the National Theatre's temporary venue, The Shed.Luigi Pirandello was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet and short story writer, whose best known plays include Six Characters in Search of an Author, Tonight We Improvise and Each in His Own Way. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934.

Le opere qui raccolte compongono la cosiddetta trilogia del «teatro nel teatro», paradigma di gran parte dell'avanguardia europea e americana fra le due guerre e oltre. Pirandello vi sperimenta originali novità costruttive e metateatrali e vi saggia un'inedita scrittura della rappresentazione che si sostituisce a quella dell'intreccio e della narrazione: la messinscena viene inscritta nel dramma stesso e nella trama si innesta l'illustrazione dei processi attraverso i quali i fatti diventano situazioni teatrali. In particolare, Pirandello si interroga sul rapporto tra i personaggi e l'autore, il cui ruolo è messo in discussione dall'anelito delle proprie creature a una totale autonomia sulla scena e nella realtà.
