Perfino nei mondi ormai irrimediabilmente antitetici delle loro mezze età: una famiglia numerosa, un lavoro da insegnante e pochi libri all'attivo, tutti dimenticati, in un caso; un matrimonio fallito, la fama, il bel mondo delle lettere, nell'altro. Perfino allora, drasticamente separati dalla vita, Parker e Jocelyn restano inseparabili, «una famiglia», come amano ripetersi. Fino al giorno in cui, nella splendida casa dell'amico, Parker trova il dattiloscritto del suo ultimo romanzo. Lo legge d'un fiato: è il migliore che Jocelyn abbia mai scritto, la porta di accesso alla posterità. Come resistere alla tentazione di diventare lui?
