Recent progress on enzyme immobilisation, enzyme production, coenzyme re­ generation and enzyme engineering has opened up fascinating new fields for the potential application of enzymes in a large range of different areas. As more progress in research and application of enzymes has been made the lack of an up-to-date overview of enzyme molecular properties has become more appar­ ent. Therefore, we started the development of an enzyme data information sys­ tem as part of protein-design activities at GBF. The present book "Enzyme Hand­ book" represents the printed vers ion of this data bank. In future a computer searchable version will be also available. The enzymes in this Handbook are arranged according to the Enzyme Com­ mission list of enzymes. Some 3000 "different" enzymes will be covered. Fre­ quently enzymes with very different properties are included under the same EC number. Although we intend to give a representative overview on the char­ acteristics and variability of each enzyme the Handbook is not a compendium. The reader will have to go to the primary literature for more detailed information. Naturally it is not possible to cover aII the numerous literature references for each enzyme (for special enzymes up to 40000) if the data representation is to be concise as is intended.

Currently,there is no single source that permitscomparisonof the factors, elements, enzymes and/or mechanisms employed by different classes of viruses for genome replication. As a result, we (and our students) often restrict our focus to our parti- lar system,missing outon theopportunityto de neunifyingthemesin viralgenome replication or bene t from the advances in other systems. For example, extraor- nary biologicaland experimentalparadigmsthat have been established overthe past 5 years for the DNA replication systems of bacteriophage T4 will likely be of great value to anyone interested in studying a replisome from any virus. These studies could easily go unnoticed by animal RNA and DNA virologists. It is our hope that this monograph will cross-fertilize and invigorate the eld, as well as encourage students into this area of research. The monograph has been divided into eight parts. Chapters appearing in Parts I-VI are intended to compare and contrast the replication and/or transcription processes and corresponding "players" of the indicated family of viruses. We are interested in the sequence of events that lead to production of mRNA and progeny genomes as well as the cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors and enzymes (viral and cellular) that are required for these processes. Chapters appearing in Part VII are - tended to providea more biochemical and biophysicalperspective of the replication and/ortranscriptionprocess. Chaptersappearingin Part VIII are intendedto provide a practical perspective on viral replication and its inhibition.

The Golgi Apparatus: The First 100 Years traces the first 100 years of Golgi apparatus discovery from the first published accounts from Pavia, Italy in 1898 to the Centenary Celebration in Pavia, Italy in 1998 and into the decade beyond. It is not intended, however, to be a comprehensive survey but rather to present the perspectives of the authors to summarize their contributions over the past 50 years in parallel with the modern era of Golgi apparatus discovery initiated in 1954 and made possible by the advent of the electron microscope. Included are methods of cell fractionation and biochemical analysis leading up to the present where efforts focus heavily on molecular biology. Topics where the authors and their colleagues have made substantial and/or pioneering contributions are emphasized including Golgi apparatus morphology and structural organization and function (especially in plants), the existence and importance of cisternal tubules, development of methods of plant and animal Golgi apparatus isolation and subfractionation, biochemical analyses of highly purified plant and animal Golgi apparatus fractions in comparison to equally highly pu- fied reference fractions.

Humans suffer from numerous parasitic foodborne zoonoses, many of which are caused by helminths. The helminth zoonoses of concern in this book are normally limited to diseases of animals which have now become transmissible to humans. In the past these diseases were limited to populations living in low- and middle-income countries, but the geographical limits and populations at risk are expanding and changing because of growing international markets , improved transportation systems, and demographic changes (such as population movements). The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that the number of people currently infected with food borne trematodes alone exceeds 41 million, but worldwide the number of people at risk, including those in developed countries, is 750 million. The increasing recognition of the public health significance of these zoonoses, especially their complicated epidemiologies, and their links to poverty, intensification of agriculture, environmental degradation, and lack of tools for control- has been welcome. However, the development of priorities for a national public health system is often a competitive exercise, and the argument for devoting appropriate attention and resources to foodborne parasitic zoonoses is generally handicapped by the lack of good health and economic impact data. The genesis of this book was a desire to draw attention to the problem of these zoonoses and to hopefully, inspire greater efforts to acquire a reliable global impact assessment and therefore a basis for improved prevention and control actions for these zoonoses. This book reviews not only the prevalence and distribution of these zoonoses, including available health and economic impact data, but will highlight gaps in knowledge that must be filled in order to gain the assessment needed to depict the overall importance of a particular zoonosis. This is critical for comparisons to other pressing public health and development needs in resource allocations. The topics on epidemiology, diagnosis, and clinical aspects emphasize the knowledge gaps that limit a full understanding of these zoonoses, and target where greater research investments on these parasitic diseases should be focused.

Dagegen orientiert sich die dänische Praxis seit langem an standorttypischen Organismen, wie z.B. der Forelle mit ihren Ansprüchen an den Lebensraum Bach. Dieses wird sowohl bei Zielsetzungen wie bei Soll-/Ist-Vergleichen eingesetzt. Anstelle theoriebeladener Ansätze steht die eher spielerische Herangehensweise, die lebendige Lebensräume erfolgreich reaktiviert. Das Buch vermittelt die dabei über Jahrzehnte gewonnenen Erkenntnisse, angepasst an deutsche Verhältnisse.2022 ff.: Wir befinden uns inzwischen im letzten (?) Verlängerungszeitraum der Wasserrahmenrichtlinie. Die Gewässerlebensräume in Deutschland wurden nicht hinreichend verbessert, ihre mögliche Artenvielfalt und Individuendichte nicht annähernd erreicht.Insofern stellt das im Jahr 2000 aufgelegte Werk von Madsen & Tent weiter eine wesentliche praxisbezogene Grundlage für das Handeln Offizieller in Verwaltungen und Wasser- / Gewässerpflegeverbänden sowie von Laien (z.B. Bachpatenschaften) dar.

In the past few years there has been the increased recognition that the effects of oxidative stress are not limited to the damage of cellular constituents. There is now evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) can alter cell function by acting upon the intermediates, or second messengers, in signal transductions. Such effects on signaling mechanisms probably account for the role of oxidative stress in inflammation, aging, and cancer. This volume brings together internationally recognized researchers in both the major areas covered by the book, oxidative stress and signal transduction. The work is organized in three sections. The first deals with the immediate cellular responses to oxidative stress and the production of second messengers. The second details the connection between second messengers and the gene. The third part looks more closely at the level of the gene.

Dieses Buch ist als EinfUhrung in die Theoretische Okologie gedacht. Den Begriff "okologisches Modell" habe ich im Titel absichtlich vermieden, denn hierzu ziihlen ganz verschiedene Methoden der mathematischen Beschreibung von okologischen V orgiingen. Ziel einer Theorie ist es, ein Verstandnis fUr die Vor­ gange und funktionellen Zusammenhange eines Fachgebietes zu erlangen. Dies kann natiirlich auch ohne Mathematik durch Denken in verbalen Kategorien ge­ schehen. Jeder Naturwissenschaftler ist angehalten, iiber das, was er im Experi­ ment oder in der freien Natur gefunden hat, nachzudenken. Dies sind bereits die ersten Ansiitze zu einer Theorie. Eine mathematische Theorie ist nun' nichts weiter, als eine Fortsetzung dieses Denkens in einer anderen Spnlche - der Sprache der Mathematik. Dabei muB immer das okologische Problem im Vorder­ grund stehen. Die Mathematik ist nur ein" mogliches Hilfsmittel, urn em besseres Verstandnis fUr die okologischen Vorgange zu bekommen. Anders als in der Theoretischen Physik sind in der Okologie kaum all­ gemeingiiltige Prinzipien und Gesetze gefunden worden, aus denen man die Losung eines speziellen Problems deduzieren kann. Eine Ursache hierfUr mag neben der Komplexitat von Okosystemen auch die Schwierigkeit sein, Modelle und Theorien der Okologie durch gezielte Experimente in der freien Natur zu iiberpriifen. Das Fehlen einer allgemein anerkannten Theorie hat zur Folge, daB die Auswahl der induktiv aufgestellten Modelle subjektiv sein muB. So wird man­ cher Leser einzelnen Darstellungen dieses Buches nicht zustimmen. Es gibt recht verschiedene Methoden des Modellierens. Mitunter ist nicht einmal klar, mit welcher Fragestellung man an die Objekte herangehen solI.
