Er studierte am Eton College und hat einen Abschluss in Hispanistik an der University of London. Grylls diente von 1994-1997 beim Special Air Service, einer Eliteeinheit der Britischen Armee. Im Jahr 1998 bestieg Grylls im Alter von 23 Jahren als jüngster Brite den Mount Everest.
